(SH) - I'm a veteran observer of the bestseller list, so you'd think by now I wouldn't be so shocked at what books people buy. Still, noticing recently that the new Paris Hilton book had hit The New York Times top 10, I had to do a double take.
The only thing more stunning than the fact that the Hilton hotel heiress and reality TV star had risked chipping her manicure to tap out an entire book was the fact that thousands of people were buying it.
Having thrown the volume in a drawer with little more than a glance, I pulled it out for a more careful look: Was there something I had missed?
"Confessions of an Heiress: A Tongue-in-Chic Peek Behind the Pose" (Fireside, $22), is chock-full of classy photos of Hilton. (I particularly love the whipmistress outfit she's wearing on page 16). Between photo spreads, she offers deeply philosophical advice on how to act like an heiress.
For instance: "Never be too easy. If you're too easy, a guy knows he has you." And: "Never, ever wake up before ten; never go to bed before three. Normal hours are for normal people. You never want to be normal. Anyone can be normal. How boring. I'm yawning."
I must say, I was drawn to that last tidbit (Note to boss: See you when I roll out of bed). But sometimes in this job you have to ask the tough questions: Who on earth was snapping up these books as if they were free crab cakes at a society banquet?
I decided to head to the local bookstore, the Tattered Cover, to find out. I would stake out a spot near the shelf where the book was displayed, and when someone picked it up, I would pounce.
I walked into the bustling store, hopes high - only to encounter my first problem: Where was the darn book?
Suddenly, I felt like a kid in a drugstore looking for condoms, but too embarrassed to ask for them.
I swallowed hard and made my move. A few, excruciatingly humiliating minutes later, the clerk led me to a shelf labeled "Biography."
Sure enough, there was Hilton, right where you'd expect - next to books about other important people, such as Benjamin Franklin, Katherine Graham and Ulysses S. Grant. This, of course, only makes sense when you compare Hilton's contributions to the betterment of humankind ("I'm partial to the smoky-eye-and-light- lip look") to theirs.
I sat in a comfy green chair and hid my intentions as cleverly as a pheasant hunter peering through the bulrushes. Casually leafing through Hilton's book, I secretly kept my eyes peeled for prey.
Meanwhile, the more I read of Hilton's wardrobe tips, the more my hopes sank. No offense to the store's clientele, but I began to realize this wasn't exactly Hilton's target market.
"Show off your navel and belly," she writes.
"If you wear jeans, wear them really, really low-waisted."
"Dress supersexy when you don't have a boyfriend, or if you want to make your boyfriend jealous."
Looking up at the customers wandering by, I wondered: Do Eddie Bauer windbreakers and suede clogs count as supersexy?
Still, I soldiered on. In fact, I stayed for what seemed like hours - but then, time tends to stand still when you're reading intriguing prose like "Here is one of my major secrets revealed: I have curly hair."
OK, here's where I admit a major secret of my own. I can't be totally certain some society maven or flashy fashionista didn't come tripping in on her 5-inch Manolo Blahnik heels and pluck the book off the shelf right under my nose. It seems I fell asleep at some point during my little investigative outing.
Did I mention the comfy green chair?
You might think that would be the end of the story.
But I wasn't about to quit now. I surfed the Internet for Paris Hilton fan club sites, where I found that her admirers aren't as clueless as you might think (i.e. "I like pairs(sic) Hilton she a cool ... girl and i would love to hang out with her").
I phoned the book's publicist, who detailed the kinds of people who show up at Hilton's book signings.
"In general, I would say there are a lot of teenage girls entranced with her, that's huge," she said, "(there's) a lot of men of all ages, some extremely intelligent, quite taken with her, old people, young people, kids with their moms, 20-somethings who like her fashion sense and that kind of thing."
"Men of all ages?" I ask with suspicion. She caught my tone and immediately went on the defensive.
"They look pretty normal. They're dressed in suits and Polo shirts."
"But, isn't it kind of creepy that older men are obsessed with her?" I pushed.
"It's not as creepy as other things," she said. "I think it's fairly OK actually, in the line of creepiness."
I can't say I was totally assuaged by that argument. But the woman had a point: A person could do worse things than ogle Hilton in her whipmistress outfit (they could, for example, ogle her in the backless number with only strands of wispy blue gauze standing between her and the night air).
In the end, I had to change my mind about the book. After all, who am I to say that something has no merit when so many people of all ages - and, dare I say, fetishes? - obviously adore it.
From now on, I'm going to quit being so judgmental. I'm going to focus on more weighty questions of life - just like my new role model, Ms. Hilton.
"Of course I live in fear of pimples," she writes on page 49. "Who doesn't?"

After weeks of rumors, Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie will begin filming The Simple Life 3, the third edition of the duo's popular "fish out of water" Fox reality-sitcom tomorrow.
According to the New York Post, The Simple Life 3, which was first announced by Fox way back in July but is rumored to have been delayed for reasons ranging from Paris having a temporary falling out with Nicole to Paris simply having no time for the series as a result of her recent busy heiress schedule, will center around a month-long Greyhound bus road trip.
As in The Simple Life 2's Airstream trailer road trip, the Greyhound bus tour will feature the girls visiting local families and "working" at a wide array of odd jobs. But unlike Simple Life 2, this time around the girls will not have a swanky home on wheels and will instead just be travelling around the northeast United States in a normal Greyhound bus that will also be ferrying "normal" members of the public that are travelling to the same destination.
"They'll be staying with different families for different lengths of time while they do a variety of jobs," a source close to the production told The Post. According to the paper, the jobs will include "professional internships" (rumors of Fox attempting to land the duo Congressional internships in Washington have been floating around for weeks) and both white and blue collar positions in politics, finance, and the service industries.
The program's November shooting schedule will likely result in Simple Life 3 differing from Simple Life 2 in one easily noticeable aspect -- the girls' clothing. Back in January, Fox delayed production of Simple Life 2 until the weather warmed up (and confined their road trip to the Sun Belt) so that the duo wouldn't catch cold in their barely-there ensembles. But given the Simple Life 3's "autumn in the northeast" shooting schedule, it would appear the two will be covering up a bit more this time around... or defiantly braving the cold in the name of fashionistas everywhere.
Since The Simple Life 2 aired this summer, Paris has been near ubiquitous and remained in the headlines by, among other things, launching a jewelry line, publishing a book, filming an upcoming National Lampoon's movie, recording her own pop-rock music album, opening her own nightclub chain and, of course, appearing in a new sex tape scandal.

R&B heartthrob Usher might want to call Paris Hilton for some advice now that a videotape is being shopped around that purportedly shows the "Confessions" singer having sex with two women, reports the New York Daily News.
The tape is said to have been made when he was 19. According to a source who has seen the tape, the then-up-and-coming singer was introduced to the two women by the owner of a club where he performed.
"The club owner wanted to show his gratitude," the source said. "So he hooked him up with these ladies."
The source, who has seen the complete tape, said, "There's no doubt it's Usher. You can see him hamming for the camera."
David Hans Schmidt, the Phoenix-based agent who has brokered nude photos of Jessica Lynch, Amber Frey and Paula Jones, said he's heard the tape is on the market.
"It could fetch a lot of money," Schmidt says. "Usher is extremely hot."

PARIS Hilton has been seen kissing US tennis star Andy Roddick, just days after declaring she was in love with Mark Philippoussis.
The billionaire social butterfly was seen kissing Roddick in the expensive Light nightclub at the ritzy Bellagio casino on the Las Vegas strip.
Roddick had been partying with tennis legend Pete Sampras and linked up with Hilton and her sister Nicky after they opened a new restaurant at the Bellagio, Fix.
The New York Post reported Roddick and Hilton kissed on Saturday night and were part of a party that included actor Leonardo DiCaprio.
Just a day earlier, Hilton told shoppers at a Los Angeles jeans store she was in love with Philippoussis, that he had dumped singer Delta Goodrem because she was boring and then produced an SMS picture of a half-naked Philippoussis on her phone.
Yesterday a spokeswoman for Light said there was no sign of Philippoussis on Saturday night and only confirmed the billionaire socialite was there with Nicky.
In Los Angeles yesterday Paris Hilton's rep Gina Hoffman said she did not know anything about the kiss.
Earlier when asked about the Hilton-Philippoussis relationship, Ms Hoffman said they were friends and "they have mutual friends, that is how they met."
When asked if the two were dating, Ms Hoffman said: "Like I said, they are friends.
"I don't know what part of that is confusing."
Last night Roddick's management was not available for comment.

[World News]: Sydney, Oct 28 : Tennis star Mark Philippoussis has denied having an affair with hotel heiress Paris Hilton, although he was spotted party hopping with the blonde in New York.
"We have mutual friends," the tennis ace said on the Australian radio 2GB.
"All of a sudden if I'm seen together with someone else and it's pretty much that I am going out with them or something's happening," he added.

Angelina Jolie chooses to play characters with whom she can identify. Even when she's portraying a fish.
"When I was invited in to meet with [the producers] of 'Shark Tale,' they brought me into this room and there were all these different pictures of fish," the actress recalled in a recent roundtable interview. "And they were going to explain to me which fish was what they wanted me to do, and I kind of looked around and I saw this fish that I could see Will [Smith] doing. And then I saw this fish with this big red mouth and pointy eyebrows and I thought, 'They can talk as long as they want. I know I'm that fish.' That was my fish."
Jolie was drawn to the sexiness of the fish named Lola, but little did she know that Lola was actually a vixen with ulterior motives. "My mom actually said, 'I don't know why you're the bad fish, you're a good person,' " Jolie joked.
In "Shark Tale," an animated mob spoof, Jack Black voices a shark whose family refuses to comprehend his vegetarianism. Will Smith, meanwhile, plays a fish who claims to have killed the shark's brother (voiced by Michael Imperioli of "The Sopranos"). Robert De Niro, Renée Zellweger, Martin Scorsese, Vincent Pastore, Ziggy Marley and Katie Couric also provide voices.
The movie, which opens October 1, marks Jolie's first experience in animation.
"I hate my own voice," she said. "Like most people, I listen to myself on a phone or on an answering machine and think, 'Ugh.' So the first time I did it I came in trying to make [different] voices. I felt safer changing my voice, but they didn't let me. They wanted it to just be my voice."
Jolie, who co-stars in the just-released "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow," has a big fall on the big screen, as she also plays Olympias in "Alexander," due November 5 (see "Colin Farrell Trying To Get Into Alexander's Skin; Angelina Jolie To Join Him").
Of the three, the Alexander the Great biopic was her favorite as she's partial to dramas. "As an actor, it's more fulfilling for your soul," she explained. "And as a woman you can go through so many different emotions and you can analyze yourself and the world and your relationships. So when you're done ... you feel like you've grown and changed."
Jolie certainly experienced a mix of emotions working with notoriously bullheaded director Oliver Stone, whose credits include "Any Given Sunday" and "The Doors."
"You can disagree or agree with Oliver or where he's coming from," Jolie explained, "but he's coming very straightforward with that and so I appreciate that. He didn't allow anybody to be safe. If anything, he demands a certain kind of commitment and bravery and doesn't allow for anybody to get too relaxed."
Jolie experienced Stone's expectations on the first day of shooting "Alexander."
"I had this 6-year-old Alexander, which was this little boy, the sweetest little boy, and I had to take him and I had to sing, which I hate doing, with my accent, and hold this python and try to get the python around the boy's neck while I'm singing to him and convince him not to be afraid," Jolie said. "On our first day! And then it was getting really late and I had to switch snakes and pull the other ones out and they were getting kind of wild. And [the trainers] said, 'It's nighttime and they think it's time to feed.' And I said, 'Oliver, it's nighttime and apparently it's feeding time.' And he was like, 'Oh, just get in there!' "
Stone also insisted Jolie and co-stars Colin Farrell, Val Kilmer, Rosario Dawson, Anthony Hopkins and Jared Leto stay in character throughout shooting. "He kept getting upset if I lost my accent when we would be out to dinner," she recalled. "He wanted to see everybody become who they were."
After "Alexander," Jolie can next be seen in the summer of 2005 alongside Brad Pitt in "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," directed by Doug Liman of "Swingers" and "The Bourne Identity" fame.
Jolie has scored a couple of summer blockbusters with her "Tomb Raider" movies, but said she is done with the series. Instead, she's considering another epic period piece, playing Catherine the Great in Randall Wallace's "Love and Honor."
"I love those historical characters, but I do think they need to be done right," Jolie said. "The more I've researched it, the more I think her story is very full and very deep. I take it kind of seriously, especially if it's a whole different country or a people's hero. To step into that and say, 'OK, I'm going to be this woman that you revere or respect or like or dislike, but she's a part of your history,' I take that very seriously."
